5 out of 5 stars Very Good Value . Filterless.   February 11, 2008
Sara B (Hickory, PA)
I have this Hunter humidifier and a larger Hunter humidifier with better functions as well, and I think they both do a super job. I've had the larger one for several years and it has never given me anything but good performance. I can honestly say that it receives NO special treatment and probably borders on abuse. We now have filtered softened water, but previously our spring water wasn't too pristine and the humidifier handled it great. I didn't go crazy with cleaning it all the time; I don't think that's necessary or a good idea. My ten year old son takes care of this new smaller one with no problems. We've had zero leaks. It is true that on maybe two occasions, when the older one used all of its water, I had to unplug the unit and then plug it back in for it to 'reset'? before it would start again. Not a big deal. Be sure to follow the directions and it should be A OK. This one doesn't have the humidistat thing, which I was disappointed about, but for 50 bucks I'm very satisfied. I searched several stores and couldn't find anything comparible.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away!!!   February 11, 2008
Paul (Centennial, CO USA)
I bought one of these units without first reading reviews. Bad mistake. One morning I woke up to a pool of water in my daughter's room. It had leaked all over my hardwood floors (installed less than one year prior) warping the edges. Plugged it in near the kitchen for testing. Leaked all over. What a joke. The warranty period is useless if they send me another POC unit like this one. Complete waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware   February 8, 2008
Marc L. (New Jersey)
I've owned 2 of this particular humidifier and they both had to be returned with different problems. One came with rust on the inside and put out a bad odor, and the other had a motor that was so loud & whiny (even on low) that I couldn't put it in my toddler's bedroom as planned. Where's the quality control, Hunter? High praise for Amazon, however, for a painless return process.

4 out of 5 stars Good machine, but takes some experience.   December 26, 2007

Most of the people here seem to not have much experience with these types of evaporative humidifiers. Short of installing a dedicated humidifier unit onto a central HVAC duct, these are the cleanest, most energy efficient humidifiers available. Hunter's Permawick with water pump design is very effective and eliminates the need to buy expensive paper filters two or possibly even three times each winter.

The humidifier doesn't require the weekly or even daily maintenance of paper wick filters IF you follow some simple guidelines. First, add a couple spoonfuls of bleach to the tray every few days; don't waste your money on expensive "humidifier treatment solutions". Yes, it will smell like you just cleaned a bathroom, but it will dissipate by the end of the day and is enough to prevent bacteria growth. Doing this prevents bacterial sludge from building up in the machine and prevents clogging and leaking. It takes 30 seconds and you don't have to take apart the machine each week to clean it. Second, at the end of winter, you must clean out the mineral deposits. The most cost effective way of doing this is to soak the metal permawicks in a bucket of boiling vinegar. This is much cheaper than wasting your money on CLR crap. After the bucket cools, rinse out the permawicks and dry. Use the standing vinegar to scrub out the tray and water pump impeller parts with a soft plastic tub scrubber or sponge.

The instructions for the humidifier don't tell you how to do these things. Then again, anyone with half a brain should understand: 1) the need to sanitize a machine that cycles room air through a moist chamber and 2) the need to demineralize a machine that churns through hundreds of gallons of water each winter.

I'm on my fourth winter, now, with my Hunter humidifier, and it's so much cleaner and less of a hassle than the stupid paper-wick model I had before. And no white dust like the misting model I had before that.

4 out of 5 stars Read the directions...works great   December 7, 2007

You must follow the instructions when using this unit...they aren't difficult to follow and if you don't you will end up an unhappy consumer like the rest of the reviewers of this unit. Make sure you install the drip pan properly and you must run the unit at high speed for at least 90 seconds each time it is turned on to prime the pump.

People complain about about yellow water...that is the antibacterial feature of the wicks. It is harmless and prevents harmful growth of mold and bacteria. Also, I saw a negative review about the unit not blowing cold mist...um, duh...this is an evaporative humidifier. There is no mist. You won't get the little dust specks scattered all over everything like you get when using a misting humidifier.

This unit works well and I have been using it every night. Follow the instructions and you will find this to be a great value.
