2 out of 5 stars Physics Laws have been smashed ????   August 29, 2010
Doug Pug (groton ,ma.)
Dyson has figured a way to take air and "amplify" it up to 18 times ??? WOW.. If only he could do that to a gallon of gas !! Of course, the LAWS of PHYSICS remain intact... Whatever air goes in, comes out in EQUAL volume ! And just how big of a PANSY can this guy be by thinking the air breeze from "conventional fans" are "unsettling" ??? What a fruitcake, or is he a genius trying to get ignorant people to fall for this gimmick and spend BIG bucks on this fan ? It IS a cool design i will give it that... I'll bet he drives with his car windows shut tight as turbulence while driving with an open window would surely make him want to drive off a cliff ! If you are testing the aerodynamics of something, maybe this fan can help you... if you just want a cool breeze and want to keep more of your hard earned dollar, you know what to do !

2 out of 5 stars Not bad but not nearly as special as they want it to be.   August 26, 2010

I was seeking a quiet fan to sleep with on and this fan did not meet that metric. Its sound level was on par with any other fan. It is very cool looking and it works, but a regular fan at 10% of the price would have the same effect. I only had mine for one day before returning it so I cannot say anything about the longevity of it.

4 out of 5 stars Very innovative. More safe than conventional fans.   August 21, 2010

To state that this fan has a wow factor is an understatement. Every time we have some guests in our house, it never fails to attract their attention. What with the design that is so out of this world. A fan with no blades is like seeing a car without wheels for the first time. It is even funny that once they determined that it is quite safe, the temptation is to put their heads in the hole right where the blades should be. With a household with 3 little inquisitive kids, I feel good knowing there is less chance of an accident.

The design is very simplistic. It came int he box in two individual pieces, the base which houses the motor, and the circular head that blows the air. Very easy to assemble, the circular head snaps into place in seconds, and with just a push of a button, it starts to blow like magic.

There are only 3 controls which are all located at the front of the base: The power button which is lit by a blue LED, the oscillating button on the right; and lastly, the rotary speed control in the middle. The speed control is a dimmer type, meaning it does not have several positions but a continuous smooth speed control. You can tilt it a few degrees either down or up; that is possible by just giving a little push on the upper part of the base.

Basically there is still a fan (only it is hidden inside the base), it draws in the air and pump it upward. The air will then comes out through a 1mm gap around its circular head. This air is amplified multiple times, hence it is called an air multiplier instead of a regular fan. My first assumption was that it will be very quiet, having no blades as compared to conventional fans. Realizing that the faster you move air the more you create noise, I quickly left that notion. It still makes noise as a regular fan. But it is much cleaner, smoother, and without the chopping sound.

Cleaning is a big plus. If you have tried cleaning a fan with blades and grill, you know what I am talking.

-For an uber high-tech fan like this, what seems to be mysteriously missing is a remote control.
-The product will benefit a lot if it is made with more metal parts. This is for both durability and stability.
-It can also include control to adjust the angle of oscillation. By design, it has a very wide angle. At times you may want to limit the angle to a more confined space, especially in smaller rooms or spaces.

The fan is around 60 watts, comparable to a regular incandescent light bulb.

1 out of 5 stars Full of Hot Air   August 10, 2010

In need of replacing my Vornado, I walked into one of those housewears stores to check out the displays. Upon arriving at the dyson's I was horrifed to find that none of the models produced
a good breeze capable of assiting one on a hot summer day in a small office. I'm not sure what the point of an "air multiplier" is, but it surely can't be used instead of a fan. If you want breeze and coolness, stick with a traditional fan. If you want a jumping hoop for your hampster , leave the unit unplug and this will be just the thing. Dyson vacumes may not loose suction, but it looks like this item looses the ability to give you a breeze.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic, has a little toy fan hidden!!   August 8, 2010
