Editorial Review
Medela Pump in Style is the CEO of breast pumps. Designed for moms who pump several times a day, especially those returning to work, the pump is packed in a handsome, discreet black shoulder bag. No one but another mother will ever know what lurks beneath the surface…that is, a very good, powerful pump complete with adjustable speed and vacuum control, battery pack, AC adapter, extra bottles with lids, bottle stands, "PersonalFit" breastshields, removable cooler carrier with ice packs, bottle holder, extra storage pockets, and a built-in picture frame (looking at your baby while you pump increases milk flow--strange but true!). Pumping will not be the most pleasant experience of motherhood, but this sophisticated pump makes it convenient and relatively easy--and virtually hands-free (once it's attached)! Warning: be prepared for the question from the uninitiated (non-mothers), "I love your bag--where can I get one just like it?" --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars Great pump!   June 11, 2008
Kyra E. Marshall (alexandria va)
I purchased this pump after the birth of our son. After his birth he was hospitalized for 27 days, and the hospital was a strong advocate of nursing. In fact they insisted that every mom nurse instead of using any formula. So I began pumping even before my son was able to eat. While he was in the NICU I used the professional grade (hospital grade pump), needless to say it was much better than the consumer version which I purchase and still have (two years later), but the Medela is a great product.

Like I said it is not as strong as the hospital grade, but if you have never used the hospital grade pump you will never know the difference, and I do not think there are many moms prepared to spend more than 1500 on a breast pump.

Anyway I like the pump because it was recommended by the hospital and it came with many accessories. It is easy to use, I used it everyday when I returned to work, it is easy to carry, and the top compartment provided space for the storage bottles and ice packs. I would pump twice a day at work and my milk supply remained high enough for my son. I would use the hospital grade pump at home and my personal pump at work, eventually I had to return the hospital grade pump to the hospital.

The battery pack was a life saver when I was a conference and had to go pump in the middle of no where. Mind you, you do not get the same suction strength but it got the job done.

I will say that if you do not mind carrying around a very large pump than I suggest renting a hospital grade pump, but they can be pretty awkward. I purchased my own personal pump because we plan on having another child and it was more economical to purchase the consumer grade pump for future children than rent from a hospital each time.

MAKE SURE TO PURCHASE ALL OF THE ACCESSORIES AND DISINFECTANT WIPES

5 out of 5 stars Great breast pump...even a second-hand one!   May 20, 2008
C. Alejandro (Temecula, CA)
I read a lot about the breast pumps and I knew that the medela was the best on the market, but it was so expensive! We didn't have all the extra money to spend on a breast pump, so I started looking on Craigslist to buy one second hand. I found a woman selling this exact model, for $65, and she had used it for about 4 years. I bought it, as well as new tubing, bottles, shields, pretty much just got the AC adapter and the unit from her for the $65 and everything else, brand new, ran me about $45. So, after waiting till everything new can in, I tested out the pump and it worked great! I was able to sit, pump, and be done in about 20-30 minutes! I was so stoked that this wonderful pump was working so well after so long, and only cost me about $110!! I love this pump!

5 out of 5 stars Work horse for busy mom   April 25, 2008

I have been using this pump daily for over eight months. In the beginning I could express more than 20 oz of milk daily during two 10-15 minute sessions (plus I fed my daughter at lunch when she was eating about 6 oz.). By the end of the eighth month my milk supply had significantly reduced to 12 oz daily. I called the lactation consultant and she said that it is normal for a pumping mother to have a reduced milk supply because the pump cannot extract the milk as effectively as a baby could.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the pump:

PRO

SPEED: I started out needing 15 minute breaks to fill both 4 oz bottles with the dual pumping option; but, as my flow adjusted to my daughter's needs I found that over time I ended up pumping 12 oz in 10 minutes (with dual pumping).
COMFORT: I have the pump constantly set at speed 3, with FULL suction/vacuum. Every woman requires different a setting and it took me about a week to find one that works quickly and efficiently. I have to align my nipple with the center of the cone or else I'll end up rubbing the edge and that's when it gets uncomfortable. Only once have I had cracked nipples and I believe that was due to a combination of nursing style with my daughter and edge rubbing on the pump cone. It healed up within a day or two.
EQUIPMENT: I have switched from plastic bottles to glass bottles from a different company because I am concerned about the chemicals in the plastic bottles leaching into the milk. The Evenflo Classic Glass Nurser 4 oz 3 pack found on Amazon fits perfectly on the pump.

CON

HOLDING PUMP: Because I opted not to buy the bra for hands free pumping (I choose to wear the Glamourmom nursing top under my work clothes) I have had to come up with a way to dual pump while I work at my desk. That basically means I press my left arm across my body using my forearm to hold the left pump and my hand to hold the right pump which leaves my right hand free to work at the computer. I am sure an easier way is to hold both pumps in your hands and take a break, but I am a busy bee and like the 10 minutes of "free time" to work on email.
EQUIPMENT: After four months of use the electrical cord was showing wear. I have to wrap it around the base every night to take it home and it is getting kinked. It would be nice if the cord was a little thicker.

I spent a lot of time debating between renting the hospital pump verses buying my own. In the end I chose to buy my own pump because I knew I would be using it daily for a long time. I am determined to continue breast feeding for an entire year and even though my milk supply has reduced my daughter receives the majority of her milk from me. Overall, this is the best pump you can buy, a true work horse for the working mom.

1 out of 5 stars Do you like TORTURE??? Skip Medela!!!!   April 12, 2008

It's terrible that Medela has cornered the market on breast pumps. Instead of convincing hospital personnel to push their brand on new mothers, they should spend money improving their design. 1) this breast pump is incredibly uncomfortable especially when you first start breast feeding. It's kind of a dirty secret, but breast feeding is not always natural and easy for all women. These cups are HARD plastic, not soft and remotely pliable or gentile on the breast like they should be. 2) sucking motion is VERY mechanical and will pull your nipple within an inch of their lives. I think Medela forgot to hire a woman to help with the design and instead drafted some guy from the Hoover engineering dept.!!!!

I had some real problems with breast feeding and if I hadn't tried another brand of pump, I would have given up on breast feeding all together! Fortunately, I found the Whittlestone, which was designed by a woman Dr. and is gentle and humane even with the MOST tender, beat up, duct clogged breast. When my son was in NICU, I brought my trusty Whittlestone to the hospital where the lactation consultants convinced me to try the latest and greatest computerized hospital/pro version of Medela. Even the most updated software doesn't make up for Medela's huge design flaws.
