INXS fans can rejoice over the release of this buoyant concert film, shot during an ecstatic performance before 72,000 hopping fans in London's Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1991. The Australian band's vocalist, the late Michael Hutchence, is at his feral-romantic best, stalking and swiveling his way through an energized set of welterweight pop. The show starts with a big, boomy "Guns in the Sky," takes a turn toward unexpected soulfulness with "New Sensation," and spreads the wealth with a sharp set of ballads and rockers. Hutchence has fun with a naughty "Know the Difference," plays around with a Jagger-esque take on confessional soul in "The Loved One," and milks "Never Tear Us Apart" for all it's worth. The band sounds more muscular than they did in the studio, hard-charging and rough on "Suicide Blonde," drunk on a jazzy guitar hook in "Need You Tonight," and completely danceable on "Bitter Tears." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Wow! I cannot get enough of this concert or INXS!   December 15, 2009
Jean (California)
I happened to catch this one night on VH1 and I was blown away! I was a fan back in the day and I must say I forgot how great INXS really was and how many songs they did in fact, too many to remember and not all of them were even performed at this concert. I also forgot about Hutch and even what he looked like and I was in 7th heaven watching him and all the guys and seeing how close knit these guys are together and you can see what a professional band they really are. I re-recorded it on 11-22-09 the anniversary of Hutch's death and even watch my recorded version over and over when I just want to watch it on the tv and I finally purchased this great dvd with all its extra features which are great to watch candid live footage of Inxs with Michael. No one can replace Michael, even though I saw INXS with JD here in Sacramento, CA in 2006 and while JD does have a great voice and INXS still sounded great, nobody is Michael Hutchence! I don't really even remember his 1997 tragic unexplained death, I must have been busy with family life at the time.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.   December 28, 2008

I have bought this one in VHS and a special CD edition back in the 90s as it was released, then I grabbed my DVD copy a few years ago and now I have this very specific DVD version, full of extras and even a "bonus" track which, by the way, could have been edited better... and now I guess I will be buying it again if a 'deluxe' edition hits the stores in 2011 celebrating the 20 years since the legendary Wembley Summer XS show - or hope so.

It's simply a must for any INXS fan, and even the best way for newcomers to find out why this was named to be the best performing live band ever back in the days when this was shot, and why it should remain always as one of the Michael Hutchence's personal legacy.

It's just great to see the full show again, along with the band commentary (or kind of), and the backstage and interviews extras recalling those good old days when INXS was at it's peak... only shame would be there's not the video for Shining Star, and the extras are a bit too short anyway.

Sound, quality and extra features deserve a full five stars and make it a worth-every-penny pack.

Great.

5 out of 5 stars INXS - At the top of their game...   December 20, 2008
Lauriej (OH)
It's amazing... this DVD begins with Jon at his drums, the sounds of 72,000 cheering fans, the helicopter whirling around in the sky, the guys running onto the stage, being introduced one by one... and then Michael runs out and the volume turns up... oh my !! You feel everything !!! I get chills every time ! This is the most awesome live music video ever... the guys are in top form... the six come together as one. The song list is great, from the ballad, "Never Tear Us Apart", in which Kirk's sax solo is haunting, to the get-up-and-dance tune, "Suicide Blonde". The cameras and microphones capture the musicians in all their fine tuning, and when they focus on Michael, his charismatic charm, and his sensual voice captivates all... I am intoxicated and entranced... never wanting it to end. In retrospect to INXS now, in 2008, watching this performance is difficult, needless to say. I am greatful for the music that they gave, and this video that they filmed. Hutch, you will never be replaced... your lyrics and your soul live on...

5 out of 5 stars Must Have   November 24, 2008

This is it, every collection must have "Live Baby Live". Fantastic audio and the visions is as good as it gets, my only complaint is that I didn't get it sooner!

3 out of 5 stars Good Band, Bad Videography   July 25, 2008

I really wanted to like this, but there is trouble when I find myself getting up from the chair to do household chores when a band is performing. There is no question of Michael Hutchence's rock charisma and value as the band's voice and frontman. No question either of the band's ability to write and perform catchy rock tunes. Somebody forgot they were FILMING this, and that our eyes like to see some COLOR and some VISUAL INTEREST. Maybe it's what I call the "Wembley Syndrome" - for some reason, I've never liked any performance that has been filmed at Wembley Stadium. To me, it seems dank and tomblike, that's how it shows on film. It doesn't help that there is constant smoke in the air which sometimes occludes a good view of the performers. The stage designer is held at fault for a bland and colorless setting for the performance. The band is at fault for wearing mostly black and white, the exception being two red shirts until a minor costume change for the encore. The band is also at fault for ending the main set with a wimper instead of a frenzy, fortunately they end the encore with The Devil Inside. Visually, just not interesting. The musical performance is fine - buy the CD instead.
