Unwanted pregnancy might sound like a risky subject for slapstick comedy, but Knocked Up is from writer-director Judd Apatow--so we are in the hands of a man who likes to push things. And like Apatow's predecessor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up is a shaggy crowd-pleaser, a comedy strewn with vulgarity but with a sweet heart at its center. A one-night stand between the utterly mismatched Ben (Seth Rogen, his first starring role) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) results in said pregnancy, and the two people reunite for mutual support--even though they barely know each other. Ben's a slob who lives with four other guys, all of whom share the same stunted approach to maturity; Alison is a new on-air personality at the E! channel. That these two eventually develop a shared understanding and affection is perhaps the movie's biggest stretch (some of the male-humor jokes amongst the guys are idiotic enough to test anybody's hope of civilizing them).

Rogen and Heigl don't really jump off the screen, but, to be fair, the movie frequently needs them to play straight while the supporting cast cuts up. Virgin vets Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are around to supply some humor, as Alison's sister and brother-in-law, and the four idiots who live with Ben (Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Jason Siegel, and Martin Starr) are in their own zone of sophomoric bad taste. Still, by 40-Year-Old Virgin standards, this movie doesn't explode, and it sometimes feels ramshackle to the point of not being thought out. Apatow's indulgence of actors creates some fine moments (Paul Rudd seems to have most of them), but it can also make a movie feel flabby, and this one is overlong by the length of a belly. --Robert Horton

1 out of 5 stars I don't get how this is funny   March 4, 2010

Sorry, but even though i've never seen this movie, I can't, for the life of me, understand just how this is considered funny. Please explain to me how unplanned pregnancies are considered good entertainment. Tell me how being an idiot, when we live in an era when "protection" is easier than ever to obtain(and in some cases, is FREE), is considered entertaining. Sorry but this modern age of ours, when anything, even ignorance and retardation in everyday life, is considered fodder for humor, is nothing short of DISGUSTING. Sorry, but no stars here. ZERO.

This item came exactly as described and shipped super fast. I'd recommend this seller and would do business with them again.

5 out of 5 stars Predictable but cute   February 23, 2010

I caught the second half of this movie on TV one day and had to get the DVD to see the beginning. The title pretty much tells you what the story is about, but the movie developed on its own and I was drawn to it. Two completely opposite people who would normally NOT talk to each other, let alone sleep together, have to face the consequences of their action resulting from their brief encounter. So, the beautiful career minded girl is now "knocked up" and the slacker guy now has to own up to his responsibility. Can they work out their differences? I'll let you guess! I loved this movie because I could identify with her married sister's lifestyle. (When you have children, your life is put on hold.) My favorite scene was the one where the two sisters tried to get into the nightclub -- one was very pregnant and the other was not so young any more. Priceless! This movie was fun to watch with my hubby. We both loved it.

Worth owning in some format, though for me going HD might have been taking it too far. It funny regardless of the video quality... I think the BD special features made me pretty satisfied with my purchase though. Just a great movie.

1 out of 5 stars Is this crap what all the hype was about???   January 8, 2010

I'll be honest, I haven't watched this movie. But I swear I tried. I managed about 30 minutes, waiting for something either funny or exciting. Nothing at all.

The movie's title made me fear the worst initially, but with all the rave reviews, I had to give this film the benefit of the doubt. Surely, 90% of critics cannot be out of their mind. Well guess what, indeed they can...

This is a sad load of rubbish about rubbish people (yes, that includes blondie). It's only redeeming feature was that I only allowed it to waste 30 minutes of my life, rather than the intended 90 or whatever.

There's this uninspiring joke of a guy who gets to sleep with a just as uninspiring promotion-happy Hollywood Barbie girl or something. She becomes pregnant, and I have no idea what happens after that but couldn't care to watch. Boring boring, annoyingly boring. 2 out of 10 just cos I only wasted half an hour.
