Parent participation is a must for this wordless video, which plays notable pieces by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, and other composers while presenting the alphabet one letter at a time. Designed for babies beginning at 9 months up through pre-reading 4-year-olds, this tape adopts a slow pace, starting with the drawing of each letter, forming a single image to go with it and spelling out that word. What separates this tape from other alphabet education materials is that it sometimes chooses verbs and then demonstrates them. For instance, the J begins jumping and the R runs. The simple images will attract babies, and the calm, single-word-per-letter approach will help toddlers focus, rather than be bombarded by too many images. Parents can fill in the rest when necessary. --Kimberly Heinrichs

1 out of 5 stars the worst dvd ever   November 25, 2007

3 out of 5 stars Not crazy about this one   July 24, 2007

This product says it's for kids under 2 but it didn't last 2 minutes with my twin 18-month-olds. I think this is a better choice for infants who might need a little visual stimulization, but seems boring for toddlers.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Experience For Your Child   December 6, 2005
T. Clark (norman, ok USA)
I have a 5 year old and a 5 month old. I am currently purchasing the DVDs for my new daughter and my newphew (6 mos). I've had the VHS trilogy for my son since he was born and want the updated DVD's -- though I play the videos for my daughter now and she loves them. They are incredible. The music selections are fantastic, recognizable, yet well considered. Peter and the Wolf, for example, was my favorite selection.

One reviewer said she was unimpressed with the "basic graphics." Let me remind them that this video is not for them, it's for their child, who likes it. I've NEVER seen a child not love these. I once held an all ages play group, my son was the youngest at 2, the children went up to 8. They started to get a little wild and as soon as I put on the video they ALL stopped in their tracks and started watching it. It's phenomenal.

These make the most wonderful gift for either your child, or for a niece/nephew/friend. I cannot say enough wonderful things about these programs -- they teach letters, shapes, and are better able to hold a child's interest than any other baby video out there (and we have baby einstein, too). the music is better as well. yes, the graphics are basic and frankly, a little odd sometimes -- but there is nothing i would hesitate to show to a child.

by the way -- my 5 year old comes in every time i put the video on for my daughter and watches it with her. he recognizes the music when he hears it elsewhere and gets excited when selections from familiar ballets, programs, are played. (i.e. the nutcracker, peter and the wolf, etc.)

5 out of 5 stars A great video for learning the alphabet!   May 15, 2005

This is called a "moving board book" because you are supposed to watch it with your baby and talk about it; like you would if you sat down together to read a book. I love the music. Because there are no words spoken, the music is very noticable (not just like background music).

Here's basically how it works: for the letter B, the B slowly, piece by piece, turns into a flying bee and the letter B then reads Bee. For C there are puffy clouds that move and then you see that they really are coming from the exhaust pipe of a car. C for Car. For E an elephant walks on screen and then falling rectangular shapes fall from the sky and the elephant bounces them up with his trunk. They bounce up and fall into the shape of an E. One of my favorite Mozart pieces, "Turkish March" is played for the letter R. The R has little legs and feet and runs all over the screen.

This is a very cute video. I like that it is slower pace which gives kids time to let each thing sink in. Too many baby videos are flashy and too fast. I have reviewed all the other So Smart videos so please read those reviews also.

2 out of 5 stars Simple, Quiet and Slow   January 25, 2005

Although my son seems interested in this DVD right now I find that the graphics are very simple and cheap looking. I don't have too much hope that his interest will hold. Some of the animation is so strange I find it a little frightening and am hesitant to play it for my son. Also compared to other DVDs geared to babies and toddlers it is very quiet and slow.
